Ramadan: Balancing Worship and Relationships
Ramadan: Balancing Worship and Relationships
Written By: Asad Iqbal Yakhatwi
Ramadan, the blessed month in the Islamic world, holds significant importance. It provides us with ample opportunities for worship, remembrance, and recitation of the Quran. Additionally, Ramadan calls us to improve our lives, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong relationships with relatives, friends, and neighbors.
During Ramadan, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) devoted himself to worship, yet his love, compassion, and kindness extended to his relatives and neighbors. He actively involved his relatives in his worship and religious activities, guiding them towards the light of faith.
Several incidents and hadiths during Ramadan reflect the Prophet's worship and interactions with his relatives. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught the best ways of worship during Ramadan, spending his nights in Quranic recitation, prayers, and remembrance.
Furthermore, incidents like the one involving Zainab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), a servant of the Prophet, who accidentally spilled water on herself while fasting, and Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) saw this and cleaned her mouth with a tooth stick, pleasing the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The Quran also provides clear directives about the significance of Ramadan and its deeds. For example, "O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous" (Surah Al-Baqarah: 183).
Another incident involves Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), who saw in a dream during the last Ramadan night that she had a glass of water in her hands, and she went to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to drink it. He prayed for her to drink the water and engaged in conversation with her.
These events and hadiths during Ramadan depict the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) worship and his exemplary conduct in maintaining familial and societal relationships, thereby providing us with guidance on balancing worship and connections during this sacred month.
