Upholding Dignity: The True Essence of Examinations

Asad Iqbal Yakhatwi

In the wake of today's release of the 10th-grade board exam results, jubilation fills many households as parents rejoice over their children's accomplishments. Sweets are distributed, and happiness knows no bounds. However, amidst the celebration, there are those whose hearts sink upon discovering that their children's results have not met expectations. These disappointed souls face not just the sting of failure but also the reproach of their parents, potentially leading to the premature end of their educational journey.
Yet, amidst this emotional rollercoaster, it's crucial to remember the essence of examinations as encapsulated in the Arabic proverb: "عند الامتحان يكرم الرجل اويهان ". Translated, it means "During exams, a person's dignity is either upheld or compromised."
This proverb serves as a poignant reminder that the true value of examinations lies not solely in the outcome but in the process itself. Examinations should be seen as opportunities for growth, learning, and personal development, rather than mere determinants of success or failure. They are meant to challenge individuals, pushing them to strive for excellence, but also to teach resilience in the face of setbacks.
Therefore, let us uphold the dignity of our children, regardless of their results. Let us support them in navigating both success and failure, understanding that true education transcends grades and accolades. Instead, it lies in fostering a love for learning, resilience, and the unwavering belief that every setback is but a stepping stone towards greater achievements.
